Pacquiao pays tribute to De La Hoya

Manny Pacquiao wished Oscar De La Hoya all the best in life shortly after the Golden Boy announced his retirement from boxing Tuesday.
“I am very happy for Oscar and his family,” Pacquiao said in a statement. “I think he made the correct decision.”
Pacquiao, currently the consensus No.1 pound-for-pound boxer in the planet, turned out to be De La Hoya’s final opponent. Pacquiao thoroughly beat De La Hoya last December, handing the Golden Boy his fourth loss in his last seven outings.
Pacquiao was humble in victory, telling De La Hoya that he is still his idol shortly after their fight.
The General Santos City-based southpaw also acknowledged De La Hoya’s contribution to the sport.
“Fighters of my generation owe him a great debt. I wish him nothing but the best,” he said.
De La Hoya retired with a record of 39-6, including 30 stoppages.
Pacquiao, meanwhile, is still far from hanging up his gloves. He is slated to face British star Ricky Hatton on May 2 (May 3 in Manila) in what could be boxing’s richest fight for 2009. - By Dino Maragay (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)
